How Many Publishing Houses Will Be Left?

So, I bet you heard about the merger between Penguin and Random House. You've probably already blogged about it, too. I'm always the last to know. Okay. Maybe I wasn't completely in the dark. Thing were hinted at during our Pearson review of textbooks (though it was a different publishing house when I heard of a potential merger). Not that I have a stake in any house what-so-ever. *Tear*

Every day I am more amazed with the changing climate of the publishing world. It makes me wonder how many other larger publishing houses are going to merge in order to stay in the black.

The new venture will now be called Penguin Random House if the deal is approved (pending approval...see article link). Come on, guys! You are two publishing giants and that's the most creative name you could come up with? Sheesh.

I thought I would make up a couple names and send them in. Just kidding.

Or am I?

Random Penguin, anyone? What about House of the Penguin? Or Pandom Renguin?

Here's the link if you're interested!

Happy Monday!

  1. I didn't know about this. Guess that makes me the last to know.

I'd much prefer to see it called 'Random Penguin'. ^_^

  2. Has it been confirmed yet? Last I heard it was just a very likely rumour. I'm not sure how this is going to change the publishing landscape, I'm self-published myself but not one of those zealous ones that tries to convert every writer I meet.

These are interesting times, for sure.

  3. I like Random Penguin. Or even just Penguin House. I'd heard of this but only seen one blog on it so you're at the forefront!

  4. I hate to be one of those people talking about the fall of the publishing industry, but this is definitely not a good sign. :-/ But I do like the image of penguins living happily in a random homestead!

  5. Everyone seems to agree that "Random Penguin" would have been a better name. They should have gone with that.

  6. Random Penguin makes me laugh, but so does Penguin House. Sometimes a good laugh is best.

  7. Interesting! I hadn't heard of this, but then again, I've fallen behind on publishing news lately... Pengin House or Random Penguin would have been better too.

  8. I'll take House of the Penguin! Or Random House Penguin (just because that brings to mind a penguin house pet wearing pink slippers. I don't know where the slippers came from, but . . .)
